Ethernet was invented by Xerox, and made practical by the joint work of Xerox, DEC, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. AMD usually gets left out, but I was there at the time and I remember what happened. History. Xerox did not try to maintain total control over the standard, unlike some other companies we could all name, but instead made the standard freely available. Eventually, the IEEE took over the standard, and it become IEEE 802.3.
