A Reference Site for Wiring Small Networks

Welcome To John's Closet

...wiring closet, that is.

What's In John's Closet?

How this site came to be...

I put this site together back in 1996 because when I tried to wire my house for a small UTP (10-baseT; twisted pair) Ethernet network and a bunch of phone lines, I couldn't find a lot of the information I needed. Like "whats a EIA 568B?", or is it "A?". And how do you connect all those wires in your 10baseT cable to the socket on the Ethernet Hub? Searching with Yahoo and Webcrawler and Lycos mostly just turned up wiring companies, no how-to-do-it info for ordinary people like me.

Times have changed and many more resources are available, but this site still seems to serve a purpose, so it is here for your viewing enjoyment. For some time there was a bulletin board area on this site for people to ask questions and get answers. I have neither the energy nor expertise to support that any longer, plus people got really tired of my sarcastic attitude about Windoze, so the BBS is gone. The reference material and sarcastic attitude are still here.

While you're here, don't forget to get your tips for crawling under the house!

As you will quickly discern, I've had a lot of fun with perl scripts here too. Perl is so cool. It started on Unix, but it runs, usually without modification, on Macs, Linux, Unix, and Windoze. And it's all free! http://www.perl.com

This site was created to be useful to people, and I have no commercial interests in it. Feel free to take what you need from this site. I'd appreciate being credited. I'd be really bummed if you plagarized a whole bunch of stuff, though. Especially my sarcastic attitude.
